elk preserve

We caught some amazing shots last week at the elk preserve just outside of Reedsport in southern, coastal Oregon. The morning was incredibly foggy and the elk were uncharacteristically close to the viewpoint.

Notice in some of the shots that the male elk have lost significant amounts of their antlers. Turns out elk shed their antlers once a year, in the early spring (no longer needing them after mating season comes to a close in the late fall and the foraging technicalities of winter are over). Elk that are older and in better shape lose their antlers first.

Huh. Who knew!

Oregon State Gemstone

Sunstone.

Found in Southern Norway, Siberia, Middletown DE, Statesville NC, and, most plentifully, in Oregon. What makes the Oregon strain distinct are the traces of copper found within that give it a shimmery, labradorite hue. Take a look:

chasing fall

My sister and I were laughing yesterday while pulling into Hilton Head, as it seems like I've chased fall clear across the country. The brilliant Pacific NW leaves were just starting to be demolished by winter's teeth as I flew out to Georgia where trees were in full bloom. As we drove further southeast and coastward, the leaves continued to be in full perfect glowing bloom.

I've recommitted to conquering my camera as of late. It's got so many settings and workings to consider. Thought I'd share a smattering of those less successful, though indicative of how crazy busy hazy poignant amazing this fall proved itself to be.

Coastal Snapshots

The collection is suddenly huge and growing by the week. To get myself psyched for a one hour meeting in Newport (read: 3.5 hour drive) on Friday (read: from 4-5 pm), thought I'd post a couple of my favorites from a recent trip to Florence.

This was one of the June days when the heat wave hit Portland, which means afternoon fog and chill on the coast.

Bought tuna from this salty character. Tuna season had started that week in mid June and the nearshore waters were so cold that this guy caught this tuna over 100 nautical miles off the coast. There was cigarette ash in our tuna. Love it.

Birthday Poster Complements of Ian Greenfield's PhotoShop prowess

Hannah turned 25 last Saturday, May the 1st. Adriel, Sophie, Hannah and I loaded in the car and set off for Hood River. It was a damn good time. AND, her and I both caught a trout.


The best story I heard all day was that in response to her being born at Noon, her Dad constantly reminds her that she made him miss lunch. Cuteness.
